The Motorist is a property located at Gembrook on the Eastern outskirts of Melbourne in the Dandenong Ranges. It was originally a country garage of the 1950’s servicing the mainly agricultural and timber felling area at the time.
This garage was called The Terminus as it was located at the end of the Puffing Billy Railway. The name has gone but the train still arrives opposite The Motorist all these years later. The Motorist complex houses three separate businesses broadly related to the tourist industry. One of these businesses is The Motorist Collection/Museum which exhibits vintage and classic vehicles before, during and after restoration along with associated memorabilia of the period.
The collection is available for viewing anytime by appointment with the owner. It is also open casually for individuals and passing tourists during some weekdays and weekends. A small entry fee applies to help cover the costs of lights and power. Some of the vehicles are available for joyrides through Vintage Fun hire cars. This is on a chauffeur driven basis and by prior separate booking.
